• A converted penalty scores like any goal: 4 points for a forward, 5 for a midfielder and 6 for a defender, and it often drags bonus points too.
• Over a season a club's taker banks several returns his team-mates never get.
• Buying a forward or midfielder for penalties he does not take is one of the most common and costly FPL mistakes.
• Read the Share column before you pay for the badge. A player at 50% is worth roughly half the penalty upside of one at 100%, and anything under 80% is a coin flip rather than a role.
• Penalty duties change on a new signing, a manager decision or a missed kick, so check the taker before you buy for the pens.
