The FPL Copilot chip strategy optimizer tests every valid combination of Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain across your remaining gameweeks and ranks them by projected points. Enter your Team ID and it works from your actual squad, budget and the chips you still hold, so the answer is specific to you rather than a generic calendar. Across more than 300 real squads, optimal chip timing was worth an average of 49 points over playing no chips at all.
You get two sets of chips in 2026/27, one for each half of the season, and the first set must be played by the Gameweek 19 deadline. Only one chip can be played per gameweek. For what each chip does and how the two sets work, read the guide to the FPL chips in 2026/27, check fixture swings on the fixture difficulty ticker, and see the projections behind every recommendation in the expected points table.
Use your Wildcard before a major fixture swing or double gameweek when 5+ players need replacing. In 2026/27 you get two Wildcards: the first is playable from GW2 and expires at the GW19 deadline, the second covers GW20-38. The strongest pattern from past seasons is Wildcard the week before a DGW to set up a Bench Boost: in 2025/26 that WC + BB pairing was worth +58 median points across 7,124 optimised squads.
Free Hit is most valuable in blank gameweeks, when 5+ of your players do not have fixtures. In 2026/27 you get two Free Hits: one playable from GW2 until the GW19 deadline, one for GW20-38. Blanks are usually confirmed once cup runs and postponements land, so hold Free Hit until a blank is real. In 2025/26, 68.8% of 7,124 optimised squads had the blank gameweek as their optimal Free Hit. Never Free Hit in a double gameweek when you could Bench Boost instead.
Bench Boost is best played in a double gameweek when all 15 of your players have two fixtures. A DGW Bench Boost averages 18-25 points from your bench vs 8-12 in a single gameweek. In 2026/27 you get two Bench Boosts, one per half (GW1-19 and GW20-38). The classic setup is Wildcard the week before the DGW, then Bench Boost with a bench full of doublers.
Triple Captain in the gameweek with the highest captaincy ceiling: a double gameweek for your best premium, or a standout home fixture against a weak defence. In 2026/27 you get two Triple Captains, one per half (GW1-19 and GW20-38). The model picks TC based on the specific player with the highest projected xPts, accounting for fixture, rotation risk, and historical ceiling.
Eight: two each of Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, and Triple Captain, one set per half of the season. Bench Boost and Triple Captain are available from GW1; Wildcard and Free Hit unlock from GW2. First-half chips expire at the GW19 deadline and the second set covers GW20-38. Using them at the right time can be worth 40-60 extra points over the season.
Bench Boost adds the points from your four bench players to your gameweek total, so all 15 of your squad score instead of the usual 11. It lasts one gameweek. It is worth exactly what your bench delivers, which is why it pays most in a double gameweek with a bench full of starters.
Triple Captain makes your captain score triple points instead of double for one gameweek. If your captain does not play, the chip passes to your vice-captain. It is worth one extra copy of your captain's score, so it pays most on a premium player in a double gameweek or a soft home fixture.
Free Hit gives you unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, then your squad reverts to exactly what it was before. Nothing carries over, so you draft only for that week. It is most valuable in a blank gameweek when several of your players have no fixture.
Until the fixture calendar produces confirmed double and blank gameweeks, the strategy is about windows: play the first Wildcard on a big early fixture swing (it expires at the GW19 deadline), hold Bench Boost and Triple Captain for double gameweeks, and keep Free Hit for a blank. In 2025/26, optimal chip timing was worth +54.5 median points across 7,124 analysed squads. Run the optimizer on your squad as the season develops to get your specific path.
Wildcard changes are permanent: your new squad stays. Free Hit changes last one gameweek and your original squad reverts back automatically. Use Wildcard for structural rebuilds ahead of double gameweeks. Use Free Hit for one-week blank gameweek cover where you would otherwise have 5+ players without fixtures.
No. You can only activate one chip per gameweek in FPL. The WC + BB combo means Wildcard one week (to rebuild your squad) and Bench Boost the next gameweek (to cash in the new bench). This pairing is the strongest chip combination in FPL: in 2025/26 it was worth +58 median points across 7,124 optimised squads.
Not in the same gameweek, but they pair perfectly across two consecutive gameweeks. Activate your Wildcard the week before a double gameweek, build a squad with 15 players doubling, then Bench Boost the next gameweek so all 15 score twice. The WC + BB combo is the highest-EV chip pairing in FPL, worth +58 median points in 2025/26.
Yes. In 2026/27 you get two Free Hits and two Wildcards (one of each per half of the season), and they are independent chips. The only restriction is one chip per gameweek, so play them in different weeks. The classic pattern is Wildcard before a double gameweek, Bench Boost in the double, and Free Hit saved for a blank.
No. FPL allows only one chip per gameweek, so Free Hit and Bench Boost cannot stack. Free Hit covers blank gameweeks; Bench Boost shines in double gameweeks. The two chips target opposite fixture problems and naturally land in different weeks anyway.
Map each chip to its window. First half (chips expire at the GW19 deadline): Wildcard on your first big fixture swing, and hold Bench Boost, Triple Captain, and Free Hit for any early doubles or blanks; if none appear, use them before GW19 rather than losing them. Second half (GW20-38): the biggest doubles and blanks usually land in the spring run-in, so that is where BB, TC, and FH earn most. The optimizer tests every valid placement for your squad.
Wildcard before fixture swings or to set up a Bench Boost DGW. Free Hit on a blank gameweek when 5+ of your players have no fixture. Bench Boost in a double gameweek with all 15 of your players doubling. Triple Captain on a premium captain in a DGW or a standout home fixture vs a weak defence. In 2025/26, optimal chip timing was worth +54.5 median points across a season.
Usually no. In 2026/27 Bench Boost and Triple Captain are available from GW1 and Wildcard and Free Hit from GW2, but there are no double or blank gameweeks in the opening months, so every chip is worth less now than it will be later in the half. Most managers gain more by holding chips until fixtures, form, and rotation patterns are readable, then matching each chip to its best window before the GW19 deadline.
List the chips you have left, then map each one to a target gameweek by use case: Bench Boost on a DGW, Free Hit on a blank, Triple Captain on a high-ceiling captain week, Wildcard before any of the above to set up a stronger squad. The FPL Copilot chip optimizer enumerates every valid combination of remaining chips and ranks them by total expected points.
First set: Bench Boost and Triple Captain are available from GW1, Wildcard and Free Hit from GW2, and all four expire at the GW19 deadline if unused. Second set: all four chips unlock for GW20 and expire after GW38. One chip per gameweek, and chips never carry over between halves or seasons.
Each FPL season has two halves with one set of chips per half. Unused first-half chips (Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, Triple Captain) expire at the GW19 deadline. Unused second-half chips expire at the end of GW38. Chips do not refund or carry over between halves or seasons. Always play any leftover chip in the final available gameweek of its half rather than wasting it.
Yes, if it would otherwise expire unused. That applies at both deadlines: GW19 for the first set and GW38 for the second. The expected value of any chip played is greater than zero, even a suboptimal play. Triple Captain on the highest-xPts premium beats letting it expire, and Bench Boost on a playing bench beats letting it expire. The only exception is when playing the chip would force a -8 hit you would otherwise avoid; even then the chip usually wins out.
The chip optimizer takes your current squad, your remaining chips, and your free transfer count, then enumerates every valid placement of those chips across the remaining gameweeks. For each combination it solves the underlying transfer plan and computes total projected points. Combinations are ranked by points uplift versus playing no chips. The top 3-5 paths show as cards with chip placement, projected points, and transfer summaries.
No. FPL allows a maximum of one chip per gameweek. Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, and Triple Captain are all mutually exclusive within a single GW. The strongest pairings (Wildcard + Bench Boost, Triple Captain + Bench Boost) play across consecutive gameweeks, not in the same week.
Yes. The FPL Copilot chip optimizer is an AI-driven tool that uses expected points predictions and mathematical optimization to test every valid chip combination for your specific squad. It is free to try, requires only your Team ID, and ranks chip strategies by projected points uplift over the rest of the season.
