Best FPL Bench Boost GW1 Squad 2026/27: A Playing 15

24 July 2026 · 5 min read · Updated 30 Aug

Gameweek 1 and Gameweek 2 have both been played. This page stays up as the reference for how an all-15-start Bench Boost squad is built. It is not current advice.

Playing a chip at the GW3 deadline (Friday 4 September, 6.30pm BST) instead? The live calls are the GW3 Wildcard draft, the GW3 Free Hit XI and the GW3 Triple Captain pick. For Bench Boost specifically, the GW2 Bench Boost squad shows how the 15 is put together, and the 2026/27 chip strategy plan covers season-long timing.

TL;DR

Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 is almost always the wrong call, and Gameweek 1 of 2026/27 has now been played. The chip only pays when all 15 players start, which means no £4.0m fodder, a nailed backup keeper and a bench of genuine starters. Even then a single-fixture week caps the return at four extra one-game hauls, so the same chip is worth roughly double in a double gameweek.

An early Bench Boost is a gamble on a single-fixture week, so hold it for a double gameweek. The all-15-start structure below is still the squad shape you want, and it is what makes the chip pay whenever you fire it.

The Best FPL Bench Boost GW1 Squad 2026/27

The pitch above is a Bench-Boost-ready 15 built on the latest xPts, so it moves with the projections rather than sitting frozen on Gameweek 1. The whole point of Bench Boost is that your four bench players also score, so a Bench-Boost-ready squad has no passengers: every player is a projected starter, and the green bench is the boost in action.

Even both goalkeepers start for their clubs, so the keeper you bench still brings in points. That is the difference between a Bench-Boost-ready squad and a normal one.

Why Every Player Has to Start

Under Bench Boost, your bench points count. A normal squad benches three £4.0m fodder defenders who never play, so boosting them adds almost nothing. This squad benches genuine 90-minute starters, which you can confirm on the xPts table, and that is where the extra points come from.

People chase a "big" Bench Boost squad. The real trick is boring: 15 players who all start. Boost four nailed defenders and you beat the manager who boosted three who did not.

Should You Actually Bench Boost in GW1?

No, and the Gameweek 1 results did not change that. Gameweek 1 is a single-fixture week, so Bench Boost adds four extra one-game hauls at most. In a double gameweek those same four players each play twice, which is roughly double the return for the same chip.

The smart move is the same every season: build the playing 15 above as your regular squad, hold the Bench Boost, and fire it when the first double gameweek arrives. If you are weighing a chip for GW3 instead, the Wildcard, Free Hit and Triple Captain calls are all live on current projections.
