FPL Chip Strategy 2026/27: When to Play Your Chips

July 24, 2026 · 5 min read

TL;DR

Your FPL chip strategy for 2026/27 comes down to timing, not luck. You get two sets of chips, one for each half of the season, and the first set expires at the Gameweek 19 deadline. Do not rush them. Wildcard on a fixture swing, Bench Boost in a double gameweek, Free Hit on a blank, Triple Captain on your best premium in a high-ceiling week. Here is the plan.

The most common chip mistake is playing them early out of boredom. Hold each one for the moment it is designed for. Patience is the whole strategy.

How FPL Chips Work in 2026/27

You start the season with a full set of chips: one Wildcard, one Free Hit, one Bench Boost, and one Triple Captain. The first set has to be used by the Gameweek 19 deadline. A fresh set unlocks for the second half, and you can only play one chip in any single gameweek.

That structure is the strategy. Two Wildcards, two Bench Boosts and two Triple Captains across the year means you rarely need to force one. Wait for the right gameweek and the same chip is worth far more.

When to Play Your First Wildcard

Not in the opening weeks. Fixture difficulty and form only settle after about six gameweeks, so an early Wildcard spends information you do not have yet. The strongest first-Wildcard window is usually a clear fixture swing once the season has taken shape, often in the run toward the first set of double gameweeks.

Use the live FDR ticker to spot the swing: when a cluster of teams flips from red fixtures to green, that is your Wildcard trigger.

I test every valid chip combination for thousands of squads. The ones who guess their timing lose 40-plus points to the ones who wait for the data. Chips are patience, not gut feel.

When to Play Bench Boost and Triple Captain

  • Bench Boost: a double gameweek where all 15 of your players have two fixtures and a nailed bench. Build toward it with a Wildcard the week before so every bench slot is a starter, not fodder.
  • Triple Captain: your best premium in a double gameweek or a soft home fixture. Haaland with two games is the textbook target. Do not waste it on a single tough fixture.
  • Free Hit: a blank gameweek where half your squad has no fixture. Free Hit is a one-week rescue, so timing beats squad quality here.

Remember the one-chip-per-gameweek rule. You cannot Bench Boost and Triple Captain the same week, so a double gameweek forces a choice between them.

Build a First-Half Plan Now

You do not need to lock exact gameweeks in preseason, but you should know the shape: hold everything through the opening fixtures, Wildcard on the first real swing, then chain Bench Boost and Triple Captain through the winter doubles before the Gameweek 19 deadline.
