Wildcard is an FPL chip that lets you make unlimited permanent transfers in a single gameweek without taking hits. You get two Wildcards per season, one in each half (the first must be used before GW19 or it is lost). Unlike Free Hit, the new squad stays for the rest of the season.

Usually no. One bad gameweek is variance, not a squad problem. Check if your upcoming fixtures improve before burning the Wildcard. Only Wildcard when the squad needs structural changes (5+ underperformers, fixture swing, DGW prep), not emotional ones.

How do I build a Wildcard squad?

Start with fixture difficulty over 5-6 gameweeks. Prioritise midfield spending (8-9m mids give the best points per million). If Bench Boost follows, build a strong bench with doublers. Use xPts to find targets rather than copying template squads.

Wildcard vs Free Hit: what is the difference?

Wildcard changes are permanent. Free Hit changes are one-week only, then your original squad returns automatically. Use Wildcard for structural rebuilds before DGWs. Use Free Hit for one-week emergencies like blank gameweeks where you cannot field 11.

Can I Wildcard after GW20 for the second half?

Timing is everything. A well-timed Wildcard can swing your season by 30+ points. A panic Wildcard just resets you to average.

When to Use Your FPL Wildcard

Before a fixture swing. Teams go from nightmare runs to dream runs. The model spots these turns 3-4 weeks early. That's your window. Rebuild before the crowd catches on and prices move.

Before a DGW (for the WC + BB combo). Wildcard one week, Bench Boost the next. Build a squad where all 15 players double. This combo consistently produces the highest chip uplift in our data.

When 5+ players need replacing. If you only need 2-3 transfers, take the hits. Burning a Wildcard for 2 transfers is like driving to the corner shop in a helicopter.

After one bad gameweek. You scored 30. So did everyone. It was a weird week. Check the upcoming fixtures before hitting the nuclear button. Your squad might be fine.

To copy a template. If you're Wildcarding into the same 11 players every creator is recommending, you're not gaining an edge. You're just joining the herd. Use xPts to find your own targets.

Late in the season with no plan. A Wildcard in GW36 with no Bench Boost to follow is worth half what it was in GW32. The fewer gameweeks left, the less a rebuild can pay back.

How to Build a Wildcard Squad

Fixtures first, names second. Sort teams by fixture difficulty over 5-6 gameweeks. Build your core from teams with the best runs, not from whoever hauled last week.

Spend on midfield. FPL is a midfield game. The highest-ceiling players are premium mids. Budget defence and keeper, premium midfield. Every season.

If BB follows, your bench matters. Don't fill your bench with 4.0 fodder and then complain BB got you 6 points. Pick 4.5-5.0 players who start and ideally double. That's the whole point of the combo.
