FPL Free Hit Guide: What It Is, When to Play, Best Strategy

You know that gameweek where half your squad blanks, three players don't even have a fixture, and you're staring at a projected 22 points? That's Free Hit territory.

The problem is most managers panic-activate it on the wrong week. A well-timed Free Hit is worth 15-25 points. A wasted one? That's a safety net you'll wish you had later.

What Does Free Hit Actually Do?

Unlimited transfers for one gameweek. Your squad snaps back to normal the week after. Think of it as a one-week Wildcard. You build the dream team, watch them haul, and then it's back to reality.

You get two per season (one each half). Don't burn both early. The second half usually has the nastiest blanks.

When to Play Free Hit

Blank gameweeks. Five or more of your players have no fixture? Free Hit. Rebuild your entire XI for one week instead of taking -12 in hits. No contest.

Double gameweeks with teams you don't own. If the DGW is stacked with players outside your squad, Free Hit lets you pile in for one week and snap back. You get the upside without wrecking your long-term plan.

Not because you're angry. Your team scored 19 points and you want to burn it all down? That's not a Free Hit. That's a deep breath and one calm transfer.

Free Hit vs Wildcard

Simple rule: Wildcard when your squad needs surgery. Free Hit when one week is the problem but the squad is fine otherwise.

If you Wildcard for a blank, you're stuck with those blank-week specialists for the rest of the season. Free Hit lets you borrow them for a week and give them back.

Building Your Free Hit Team

Chase points, not value. This is one week. Forget about price rises, long-term holds, and ownership. Sort by xPts and pick the best XI.

Stack doublers. If any team has two fixtures in your FH week, get two or three of their players. The ceiling is massive.

Bench? Who cares. Your bench reverts anyway. Minimum-price fodder. Spend every penny on the starting XI.

Here's what most people get wrong: they pick the Free Hit week by gut feel. "GW34 looks bad." But bad for who? Bad for your squad specifically, or bad in general? The chip optimizer checks YOUR squad against every remaining gameweek. Sometimes the answer surprises you.
