FPL Triple Captain GW36: Should You TC36 or TC33?
52.6% of FPL squads have GW36 as their optimal Triple Captain gameweek. GW36 edges GW33 by a slim margin (46.4%) as the closest chip decision of the 2025/26 run-in.
I ran the chip optimizer across 7,124 real FPL squads. Here is what the data says about TC36 and how to decide between GW36, GW33, and the other options.
Why GW36 Is the Triple Captain Week
Triple Captain rewards ceiling, not consistency. The optimal TC gameweek is the one where your captain has the highest realistic scoring upside, accounting for the fixture, home or away, opponent defensive strength, and rotation risk.
GW36 wins for three reasons:
- Matchup quality. GW36 fixtures historically produce more blowout wins than GW35 or GW37, driven by end-of-season motivation gaps (top-4 races, relegation battles).
- Clarity by GW36. By this point in the season, you know which premium is hot and which is misfiring. TC works better with more information.
- It does not collide with Bench Boost. If BB33 is your Bench Boost week, TC needs another GW. GW36 is the natural alternative with the highest remaining ceiling.

TC36 vs TC33: The Closest Chip Call
TC at 52.6% vs 46.4% is the closest chip decision of the season by a wide margin. Other chips have clear consensus (WC32 at 81.1%, FH34 at 68.8%). TC is genuinely a coin flip that depends on your squad.
TC33 is right if:
- Your captain has a monster DGW33 fixture (two home games vs weak defences)
- You are not Bench Boosting in GW33 (chips clash)
- Your captain has rotation risk later in the season (injury-prone, rest risk)
TC36 is right if:
- You are already Bench Boosting in GW33 (you cannot stack BB and TC in the same week)
- Your GW36 captain has a premium home fixture vs a soft defence
- You want more data before committing to your final chip
How to Pick Your TC36 Captain
Triple Captain value comes entirely from the one player you pick. Get the player right and TC earns 12-18 extra points. Get it wrong and TC earns 4-6. The gap is larger than the chip itself.
Priorities, in order:
- Highest xPts for GW36. Sort the xPts table by the GW36 column. The top 3 are your candidates.
- Home fixture vs bottom-half defence. xPts already factors this but verify. A captain away at the top-4 is rarely a TC candidate.
- No rotation risk. Must be a nailed 90-minute starter. Avoid players returning from injury or on minute restrictions.
- Set-piece duties. Penalty takers and direct FK takers have higher ceilings because of bonus-point distribution.
The FPL Copilot xPts model achieves 73% top-5 captain accuracy. For Triple Captain specifically, locking in one of the top 3 xPts options is almost always correct.
The Full Chip Sequence: WC32 + BB33 + FH34 + TC36
TC36 fits into the most common optimal chip sequence of the 2025/26 run-in. 55% of 7,124 squads land on this exact four-chip combo. 69% when near-variants like WC32 + TC33 + FH34 + BB36 are included.
Each chip covers a specific moment:
- WC32: rebuild for the double. 81.1% optimal.
- BB33: cash in the double. 52% optimal.
- FH34: cover the blank. 68.8% optimal.
- TC36: highest ceiling gameweek remaining. 52.6% optimal.
TC36 is the finishing move. You have ridden the double, covered the blank, and now you hammer the captaincy in the gameweek with the best single-player upside.

Should You Triple Captain in GW36?
“TC36 wins for 52.6% of squads, TC33 for 46.4%. If you are Bench Boosting in GW33, TC goes to GW36 by default. If you are not, run the optimizer and compare both weeks for your specific captain candidates. The answer is squad-dependent and the gap is small.”
Play TC36 if:
- You are playing Bench Boost in a different gameweek (BB33 most commonly)
- Your preferred TC candidate has a premium home fixture in GW36
- You want to wait and see which premium is in form before committing
Consider TC33 instead if:
- Your captain has an exceptional DGW33 matchup (two easy home fixtures)
- You are not Bench Boosting in GW33
- You are targeting a rank push before the final weeks
Triple Captain is the only chip where player selection matters as much as timing. TC36 is optimal for 52.6% of squads, but your specific captain candidates drive the final call. Check the xPts table for GW36 before you lock it in.
