FPL Chip Strategy Guide: When to Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost & Triple Captain

I built FPL Copilot's chip strategy optimizer because I was tired of guessing when to Wildcard. The tool tests every valid chip combination across your remaining gameweeks and finds the one that maximises your expected points.

After running it on hundreds of real squads, the patterns are clear. Here's what the data consistently shows.

What the Optimizer Found

+49

Avg chip gain

Over no-chip baseline

+73

Best case

Optimal timing

3 pts

#1 vs #2 gap

Between best and second-best combo

The average FPL team gains 49 points from optimal chip timing compared to using no chips at all. The best case I've seen is +73. Even the worst case was +2. Chips always help.

What surprised me: the gap between the best and second-best chip strategy is only ~3 points. But the gap between optimal and random is 20-30. Getting it roughly right matters far more than perfection.

The Patterns That Keep Showing Up

Across hundreds of squads, the same chip strategy keeps winning: Wildcard before the biggest fixture swing, Bench Boost the following double gameweek, Free Hit the blank. The exact GWs shift each season, but the structure stays the same.

97%

WC on fixture swing

Nearly universal

79%

FH on the blank

Overwhelming favourite

72%

BB on the double

Strongest bench fixtures

For teams without a Wildcard, the optimizer shifts to Free Hit on the blank and Bench Boost on the best double. The key insight I keep seeing: your optimal strategy depends entirely on which chips you still have and your specific squad composition. No generic advice covers that.

How I Built It

The optimizer uses a MIP solver (HiGHS) to evaluate every valid chip combination. For each combo, it solves the full transfer and lineup optimization across your remaining gameweeks, then ranks by total expected points.

It considers chip interactions that humans miss. A Wildcard in one GW might make your Bench Boost two weeks later worth 10 more points because you restructured your bench. The solver sees that. You probably don't.

When to Play Each Chip

Wildcard: When 5+ players need replacing and a fixture swing is coming. Don't Wildcard when you only need 2-3 transfers. That's the most common mistake I see.

Free Hit: Blank or double gameweeks with 3+ missing starters. If only 1-2 are affected, bench them and save the chip.

Bench Boost: Double gameweeks only. A single-GW BB averages 8-12 points. A DGW BB averages 15-25. Don't waste it.

Triple Captain: Your best player's best double gameweek. High variance, but the math is clear: doubles nearly double the expected return.

FPL CopilotCreator's Tip
Run the chip optimizer before and after making transfers. Your optimal chip timing can shift based on who's in your squad. A Wildcard that looks best in GW33 with your current team might move to GW32 after one smart transfer. The solver recalculates everything.
